WhatToDoNearby - French Cable Station Museum

Cove Road and Route 28
Orleans, MA 02653

The French Cable Company was the first direct communication link from Europe to North America. In 1869 the cable was just off the coast of Canada, and in 1879 it was linked to Eastham Massachusetts, and then on to Orleans. The company set up a building in Orleans in 1890 and today houses the museum. The station transmitted world news and financial transactions. During World War 1 it was the link between the U.S.Army and France and was guarded by a contingent of United States Marines. When the Germans invaded France in 1940 the connection was closed. In 1952 the cable station was obsolete and closed permanently in 1959. The museum holds a collection of original cables, instruments, and memorabilia.
