A Boston Globe “Top Ten North Shore Attractions” “One of the 1000 Top Places to see in Massachusetts” The Sargent House Museum is a fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, built in 1782 for Judith Sargent (Stevens) Murray (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer and an early advocate of women's equality. The Museum houses an exquisite collection of American decorative arts and furniture, and one of the the finest collections of family portraits in the United States. There are also works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), descendant of the Sargent family, who loved the house and its ties to Post-Revolutionary Gloucester. The Sargent House Museum is open for tours Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 12 pm - 4 pm. Tours leave on the hour. Admission is $10; students $5; children under 12 and members are free. Visa and Mastercard accepted. Please call (978) 281-2432, email sargenthouse@verizon.net, or visit www.sargenthouse.org for more information on programs and group tours.
