Gerrish Island was taken for a fortification by the federal government in 1872. It was closed after World War 2 and is now a town park. Abandoned fortifications are scattered about the marshy area. Great surfing, wind surfing, scuba diving, picnic areas and expansive views of Whaleback Light and the Wood Island Lifesaving Station. See the www.kittery.org link for a detailed history of the fort.
