Yarmouth is one of the oldest communties on Cape Cod (1639). Leaving Route 6-A to Yarmouth and upon enterting the town there is an old stone in a hedge on the right with the initals B-Y (Barnstable-Yarmouth). The stone was put in place in accordance with an ancient Pilgrim survey. Half a mile from this point, turn left on Wharf Lane at the site of the Chandler Gray House. Loyal women devoted to the Revolutionary cause melted their pewter to make bullets for the soldiers. Returning to Route 6_A turn left through Yarmouthport and notice the famous cathedral of elms. Underneath the elms are many of the charming homesteads built by sea captains of the old Clipper ship era. On the right is the Old Yarmouth Inn that was once a stop for the stage coaches. Behind the Post Office is the Gate House of The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth. It is worth the time to stop and gather additional information relative to the History of old towns on Cape Cod.
